A message banner directed to Terry McFlynn, whose uncle and aunt had recently died in a car accident in Ireland. Instead of travelling home for the funeral, McFlynn remained to play in this match against the Mariners.
The banner, reading “Terry: In times of need the Cove is with U”, was revealed before the start of the match. McFlynn later recalled his emotional reaction to the banner:
When McFlynn’s uncle and aunt were killed in a car crash early last month, he thought about going home for the funeral, but in the end stayed to play against the Central Coast Mariners.
On a cold, rainswept night, he emerged from the tunnel at Aussie Stadium and glanced to his left, where the club’s boisterous support group, “the Cove”, was massed. A huge banner was unfurled: “Terry … In times of need the Cove is with you.”Flynn knew then that he was here to stay. “The fans are second to none, they’re by far the best fans I’ve ever played for,” he says. “It took my breath away when I saw the banner. It was much appreciated by myself, and my family. I’d personally like to thank all the lads at the Cove for what they did for me.”
